Why Practice Tests Are Your Best Study Tool

The Benefit of Practice Tests

Flashcards, drills, and review sessions all have their place, but when it comes to test prep, full-length practice tests are the gold standard. They don’t just measure progress—they train students in stamina, timing, and focus. With the March SAT just around the corner, and finals and AP exams close behind, it is time for students to set up their study plans to be solidified.

Taking a practice test under real conditions reveals more than just a score. It uncovers pacing issues, highlights weak content areas, and shows how well a student can maintain focus over multiple hours. That data becomes the blueprint for targeted study sessions, allowing students to work smarter, not just harder.

Study Skills

Practice tests are a key blueprint for creating solid study skills. They offer insight into time management and test taking skills, and allow for tutors to provide valuable feedback. Study skills are the true key to a student being successful beyond high school and will carry them through college!

The AJ Approach

When students work with their 1:1 tutor for test preparation, or takes one of our small group preparation classes, practice tests are naturally built into our customized plan.

The key is consistency. Scheduling practice tests every few weeks helps track improvement and fine-tune strategy. By test day, the format feels familiar, and nerves give way to confidence. Simply put, nothing replicates the real thing better than the real thing—and practice tests are as close as you can get without the official score report.
