Why Summer Is the Best Time to Build Study Skills

Summer gives students something the school year rarely does: breathing room. Without nightly homework and packed schedules, students can focus on the habits that actually make school easier. While many families take an academic break during the summer, it is truly the most valuable time to build skills. The most important of these are test taking and study skills!

What are Study Skills?

Strong study skills aren’t about working longer. They’re about working smarter. Students who learn how to organize assignments, plan ahead for tests, and manage distractions often see dramatic improvements once school starts again.

Even small changes can make a difference. A student who spends ten minutes reviewing notes each night retains more information than a student who crams the night before an exam. A planner that’s actually used can prevent missing assignments and last-minute stress.

The AJ Approach

The key is consistency. Study habits built over the summer tend to stick because students have time to practice them before academic pressure ramps up.

The beginning of the school year feels very different when students already know how to stay organized, study effectively, and manage their workload with confidence.

Meeting with a tutor once or twice a week during the summer focusing on study skills can have a tremendous impact on that first day of school. We recommend tying these valuable skills into tough academic subjects that require students to really apply them, such as math and history. No matter the approach, summer is an ideal time to get a jumpstart on the new year!
