David Griswold

Lafayette Office Director and Director of In-Home Tutoring

I grew up in Maine, where California glows in the distance as a golden beacon of well-tanned wonder. I enjoyed a vibrant high school career at North Yarmouth Academy, where I was chiefly responsible for fomenting “the wave” at steel band concerts around the state, and was proudly tasked with delivering my school’s valedictory address. In 2003 I set off for Yale University, where I majored in English with a writing concentration in poetry, directed an improv comedy troupe, and had the great pleasure of quoting the movie “Troy” as a graduation speaker, delivering Yale’s vaunted Ivy Ode.

After graduating from Yale, a chance to bask in the California sunshine presented itself when I was recruited to work for Google in their communications department. At Google, I had my eyes opened to the world of blogging and public relations, and early into my time there, I was sent to Australia to help manage Google’s affairs down under. In 2009, after a period of soul searching, I heard the clarion call of teaching and education, and I left Google to lead wilderness trips in Yosemite. Since that time, I have worked as a teacher around the Bay Area with children from ages four to sixteen, always aiming to pass along a zest for lifelong learning.

As a teacher and a tutor, my goal has always been to set students up for success: providing the tools they need to reach their potential and the support they need as they make leaps and bounds towards their best and brightest selves. I believe that learning is about recognizing and leveraging our innate capacities, and committing to our growth with zeal and humility. Acknowledging where we have room to grow requires courage, and of course, everyone is different. I am here to help students of all backgrounds develop greater confidence, tried and true strategies, and a set of compassionate tools for engaging with areas for improvement (laughter being chief among them).

I aim to provide all my tutees with test-taking strategies that build on their existing strengths and knowledge. Mastering standardized test-taking is an art unto itself, and I love helping students develop the skills that lead to success, and to a sense of ease and assurance in the face of challenges.
