Hannah King

Academic Tutor

I’ve always been passionate about learning, so tutoring was a no-brainer when I was in  college. Helping students achieve academic success despite challenging circumstances and unique situations quickly became my passion.

I grew up a half-hour from Kansas City, and I attended the University of Missouri, majoring in both anthropology and in ancient Mediterranean studies. I also received the Multicultural Certificate for taking classes across a wide breadth of diverse issues. My professors fostered my love of learning and helped me explore areas of study that I hadn’t even known existed. One of the things I admired most about my professors was how they could simultaneously decrease students’ anxiety and increase their passion for the subject. They held their students to high standards, pushing them to excel without making success seem unattainable.

My passion for history began at a very young age, and my bookshelves were always filled with history books. I developed an interest for how history and literature intersect thanks to my high school English teacher. She not only taught us English, but also challenged us to examine and engage with difficult periods in history through reading. She had a way of making the text seem alive, which engrossed even the most resistant students.

In college, I had the opportunity to serve as a hands-on, private, remote tutor supporting a student over two years. My student was faced with many difficulties that made focusing hard, and her grades were struggling. I learned how to motivate her and tailor my approach to meet her individual needs. I also was employed as a nanny for two summers, where the two kids and I worked on learning a variety of skills such as swimming, reading, and riding a bike. Whether I am teaching academic subjects or life skills, guiding students through learning experiences has been a joy and passion of mine throughout my life.

At AJ Tutoring, I enjoy helping students develop an appreciation for history and English. I am familiar with the stress and anxiety that can accompany schooling, so I strive to make learning an enjoyable and anxiety-free experience by cultivating a safe environment while still pushing students to achieve to their highest ability. My goal as a tutor is to compassionately partner with students in their academic journey and help them find success.

When I’m not tutoring I love to do yoga, try out new recipes, and study Ancient Greek and Latin.
