There are some big changes around the corner for the ACT, and we’re here to break down exactly what you need to know:
Format & Timeline
April 2025
- The new digital test becomes broadly available.
- The paper option will still use the old (current) format.
September 2025
- The paper version updates to the new format but remains available as a paper test.
- Similar to the SAT’s computerized test, the passage will be on the left and answer choices on the right.
- The digital interface will be less feature-rich than the SAT but will still include basic tools.
- The test will be taken on provided devices rather than personal ones.
Content Changes
- The Science section will now be structured more like the Writing section when signing up, allowing students to take the test with or without it.
- The cumulative score will now only include English, Math, and Reading.
- The test will be shorter—10 minutes shorter for those taking all sections and 50 minutes shorter if omitting the Science section.
- Every section will offer slightly more time per question, giving students a better chance to work through problems without feeling rushed.
What This Means for Students
The ACT has long been known as a fast-paced test with tight time constraints. These updates aim to ease that pressure by reducing the number of questions and allowing for more thoughtful pacing. While the Science section is now optional, we strongly recommend that students interested in STEM fields continue to prepare for it. Colleges still value strong science reasoning skills, and skipping this section could limit opportunities down the road.
At AJ Tutoring, our experienced tutors and carefully designed curriculum have already adapted to these upcoming changes. Whether your student prefers digital or paper testing, we’re ready to help them navigate this transition with confidence! Want to learn more? Check out this article from the ACT themselves
