How to Keep Learning Loss at Bay Over Breaks

Summer and school breaks offer much-needed rest, but without regular practice, skills in math, reading, and writing can fade—a phenomenon known as learning loss. The good news? Preventing it doesn’t require hours of daily study.

Effective Strategies

Small, consistent practice is more effective than cramming in August. Reading a few chapters each week, keeping a journal, or solving a set of math problems can keep skills sharp. Online resources, educational apps, and short tutoring sessions also make it easier to integrate learning into a relaxed schedule.

Another excellent strategy is to meet more frequently with your 1:1 tutor. Since some students leave during breaks, tutors often have more availability to meet with those students who don’t. Meeting with a tutor twice a week, at least, can give students the boost they need to catch up or it can allow students to get ahead and enrich their learning experience.

What is Enrichment?

Breaks are also a perfect time to explore enrichment—subjects that don’t always fit into the school year. Our goal at AJ is to help students catch up, maintain, and get ahead in their core subjects. However, enrichment goes beyond their core subjects. Diving into coding, creative writing, or a personal research project can keep curiosity alive while still feeling like a break from regular schoolwork.

A little structure ensures students return to class refreshed, confident, and ready to learn—without the scramble to catch up.
