Here Comes Middle School!

It feels like just yesterday when you were dropping them off to their first day of Kindergarten, and now they are about to be pre-teens and enter the wild world of middle school. Middle school is often the first time students are expected to manage multiple teachers, long-term assignments, and independent studying all at once. For many students, that adjustment feels overwhelming at first. Preparing them to handle this transition is critical to their long term success.

Academics Matter

Academic success during this transition isn’t only about intelligence. Organization, time management, and communication suddenly become essential skills. Students who were able to rely on reminders in elementary school may struggle when expectations become less structured.

This is also the age when academic confidence can shift quickly. A student who falls behind early may begin avoiding difficult subjects altogether.

The good news is that middle school is an ideal time to build strong habits before high school begins. Students who learn how to use a planner, break large assignments into smaller tasks, and prepare ahead for tests often become far more independent learners over time.

How Can We Prepare Students over the Summer?

The AJ approach relies on preparation, and summer is the best time to get a jumpstart on that! From teaching them new study skills, to shoring up math foundations, to working on their writing foundations these are what helps ease students into their new normal. A smooth middle school transition sets the tone for high school readiness—and gives students a stronger foundation long before grades begin carrying long-term academic weight.
