By sophomore year, many students begin hearing about “building a resume” for college admissions. That phrase sometimes creates unnecessary pressure. A strong student resume is not about doing everything. It’s about meaningful involvement over time.
Building a Strong Resume
Colleges value commitment, initiative, and genuine interest far more than endless participation lists. A student deeply involved in robotics, theater, music, volunteering, or athletics often presents a stronger application than a student scattered across dozens of activities.
Leadership can take many forms as well. Students don’t need formal titles to demonstrate responsibility and growth.
Summer activities also matter. Academic enrichment, jobs, internships, independent projects, and volunteer experiences can all contribute positively to long-term development.
Academics and Test Preparation
We can’t ignore the role that academics and test preparation play in building a strong overall college application. Taking honors and AP courses are always a smart play, especially if your student is passionate about the subject or considering pursuing that track in college. AP test preparation is as much, if not more important, than SAT or ACT test preparation depending on the schools your student is applying to.
The Role of a College Counselor
College counselors are the trail guides on the rocky trail of college applications. They can help with course selection, test preparation, and those incredible activities that build a students resume. While building that resume, it is key to have someone from the outside offer advice and act as a sounding board.
Most importantly, students should pursue activities they actually enjoy. Authentic enthusiasm tends to lead to stronger performance, stronger essays, and a much healthier high school experience overall.
