The Value of Summer Academic Planning

Summer may seem far off, but planning early can turn it from a gap in learning into a launchpad for the next school year. Without a plan, summer can slip by, leaving students scrambling in August. With first semester grades in hand, now is the time to set goals and make plans for how to best utilize the summer months.

Planning Ahead

Use your students report cards, test scores, or IReady levels as well as any teacher feedback to begin making those plans. Identify areas for review—whether it’s solidifying algebra skills before geometry, brushing up on essay writing, or previewing next year’s AP coursework. Build a schedule that balances academic work with rest and enrichment. Consider if your student will be applying to private school or college, leverage information from their college counselor to create a plan that helps them achieve their upcoming goals.

What about test preparation?

Summer is also a great time for test prep. With fewer daily obligations, students can focus on SAT, ACT, or subject test practice without the pressure of regular school assignments. The ISEE and HSPT are also important considerations when leveraging the break from school.
