Why Reading for Pleasure Boosts Academic Performance

What Role Does Reading Play?

School is so much more than just memorization of facts and figures, it is preparing students for life and the world beyond the classroom. Reading for fun may seem unrelated to academic success, but research consistently shows it strengthens vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. More importantly, it fosters curiosity and imagination—traits that make learning more engaging across all subjects.

What Can Reading for Fun Show Us?

Unlike assigned reading, pleasure reading allows students to choose material that excites them, whether it’s historical fiction, science articles, or graphic novels. This freedom builds a positive relationship with reading, making it less of a chore and more of a habit.

The benefits show up in subtle ways: richer essay language, better inference skills on standardized tests, and greater background knowledge in class discussions. Even 20 minutes a day can create lasting improvements.

When a student starts exploring books for fun rather than for a specific task, it can also help identify potential foundational gaps in a students skills as well.

How Can We Get Students Started?

Introducing your student to your favorite books or authors from your childhood is a great bridge and connection builder. Another great way to get students started with reading for fun is to introduce them to their local library and local librarian! A librarian can get to know your students interest and reading level and point them in the direction of books that will appeal to them. Creating challenges, reward systems, and more are great ideas to get the ball rolling!
