Academic Tutor

I was born and raised in Silicon Valley before attending UC Santa Cruz in order to pursue a bachelor’s in chemistry. I have appreciated the emphasis at UCSC on having kind and understanding educators, and I found that the courses where instructors prioritized interacting with students were the ones that students generally enjoyed and understood. I wholeheartedly believe that an educator’s attitude makes or breaks a student’s enjoyment of learning.

Growing up, math was one of my least favorite subjects, but at university I gained an admiration for the subject. The professors and graduate students that dedicated their time to ensuring that their students excelled made all the difference in how I viewed math. In high school, however, I had found myself frustrated in my higher level math courses at the lack of help I received from my teachers. I signed up for private tutoring and my work ethic and approach to studying completely changed. I learned methods for studying along with many organizational skills I still use today. Because of my own experiences, I take the success of my students personally.

I have been involved with teaching since my high school years, when I was a swim instructor and a swim team coach. During university, I became a teaching aid at my local preschool and moved into private tutoring. I found that tutoring students was one of the most rewarding jobs, and my ability to relate to my students helps me empathize with them and gauge their level of understanding.

I always say that practice makes perfect. I was never the type of student who could grasp concepts moments after being introduced to them: it always took practice for me to truly understand new material, and I work with my students to develop the consistency in studying they need to succeed. We are all different in the way that we learn, so it is important for me to make sure that I am delivering the material to my students in a way that makes it simple for them to grasp.

In my free time, you can find me reading books on history and social philosophy or catch me at the gym. Additionally, I am a major foodie, I love coming up with interesting new dishes and having my friends taste test them.
