Academic Tutor

I was raised in Chattanooga, TN, where I completed my undergrad at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, in biology. Furthering my education, I attended the University of Saint Joseph, where I received my MS in biology with a concentration in emerging infectious disease. As a lab instructor for Anatomy and Physiology at the local community college, I was able to immerse myself in teaching a plethora of students of many ages and with different learning skills. I found purpose in imparting my knowledge to others and helping students discover methods and strategies that help improve their overall performance in academic work.

Throughout my time in school, the sciences always interested me because they are ubiquitous and straight to the point. There’s no guessing, since each topic is defined precisely. Also, with the sciences there is always room to learn more. Sometimes “science” can be a scary term for students, but in reality, science is everywhere around us, and I enjoy helping students understand the material in concrete terms and recognize how it relates to their lives.

During my time as a lab instructor, I worked with students ranging from college freshmen to adults who were furthering their education later in life. I witnessed the struggles students, regardless of age, have with topics that build upon one another. I came to realize that most students lack study and organizational skills, so in addition to helping students learn the subject material, I incorporate methods to help them learn to actively study and to be more efficient and organized with their time.

In analytical subjects such as chemistry and physics, tackling a lot of difficult practice problems is the best way to improve, as it enforces active learning. I have found that one-on-one learning provides the best environment for customized learning: I am able to help the student approach the subject from different angles and figure out which is best for the them. In addition, it allows me to motivate the student and ensure they understand concepts before moving to new material. This is especially important because physics and chemistry are subjects that continually build upon foundational knowledge.

In my free time, I like to travel, explore foreign foods, and watch documentaries.
