I graduated from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where I received a BA in history and political science. Before attending Lewis & Clark, I was a student at Mountain View High School. Throughout both high school and college, I took an interest in education and the local community, tutoring my fellow students during my time at Mountain View High and working as a teaching assistant for underprivileged primary school students in the Mountain View area during time off from college.
I enjoy teaching history and English at AJ, because these subjects reveal so much about humanity and about our world today. They also help teach students the fundamental critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills that are essential to success in any field.
For me, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is seeing progress and a desire to learn more in my students. I believe that education is a lifelong experience, and the value of that experience is heavily influenced by a student’s experiences early in their academic career. By giving students a positive experience with learning early on in life, teachers encourage their students to continue to grow intellectually for years after they have graduated. In my own life, good teachers in high school and college have inspired me to continue learning about topics that interest me. AJ’s 1-on-1 tutoring format fits with my philosophy of education: by engaging personally with our students, we are able to forge connections and encourage students to pursue their avenues of interest while simultaneously building their confidence with subjects they find more difficult.
In my spare time I enjoy hiking, playing soccer, writing, and reading about history and current events.
