Ben Coupland

Lafayette Office Director, Test Prep & Academic Tutor

While I was earning my MS in Applied Physics at the University of Michigan, I had the opportunity to work as an instructor for introductory physics. Though I deeply enjoyed my classes and research, I discovered that my favorite part of the day was holding office hours, when students would come in and talk one on one about physics. Clarifying problems and concepts for students reminded me of my own time learning the material, and I remembered how valuable it was to have peers or teachers of whom I could ask questions.

After getting my Master’s, I began tutoring full time in physics and math. I’ve worked with students of all learning styles and ability levels, from students who feel that the material has never quite clicked for them, to those who feel on top of things but want to push themselves and enrich their understanding. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn and become comfortable with physics and math, and I greatly enjoy discovering how particular students learn and then tailoring my instruction to suit their needs. I excel at helping students develop a dynamic understanding of the material, connecting it to other things that they’ve learned and care about.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking, camping, reading, rock climbing, and playing video games, and I try to get out into the beautiful wilderness surrounding the Bay Area as much as possible.

Happy parents and students.

My tutor and I had very helpful, conceptual discussions. The absolute most helpful thing was the use of pictures and props–they helped me visualize the concepts very well. We also did lots of variable manipulation which helped with how to approach certain types of problems and identify the concept of it beforehand.  Read what others are saying
