I graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in Comparative Literature. In my studies, I gained an introduction to national literatures from all over the globe. In particular, I delved into Turkish, Latin American, and Italian literature, both in original and translation. Having read and discussed bodies of literature diverse in terms of geography and time period, I learned how to be a more critical reader, writer, and speaker.
In addition to studying literature, I also minored in Italian. During my junior year, I studied in Florence and lived with an Italian family for three months. In addition to improving my command of the language, I took classes on Italian film, cooking, and art history. Because I enjoyed the studies so much, I decided to minor in Italian.
After studying Italian, I decided to pivot to Spanish language literature. I began by reading nineteenth and twentieth century classics of Latin America, thus establishing a foundation in the canon. After studying these works, I transition to contemporary autobiographies from Latin America, through which I developed a deeper appreciation for and understanding of the narrative of the self. The final course, classics of Chicano literature, was my favorite. Although the genre is relatively new, I appreciated how the authors explored the themes of cultural hybridity through their allusions to famous works from antiquity and from Mexican folklore.
At Stanford, I began tutoring to share my love of learning, literature, and language. Just like the works I studied, my ESL and SAT students came from a variety of backgrounds and language levels, from middle school students to community college attendees. Because some students were local and others were international, I also learned about what teaching techniques are more useful for in-person tutoring sessions versus those conducted online. Despite their different backgrounds and education needs, all agreed that a patient tutor with an enthusiasm to learn would help them improve. Likewise, I believe that tailored instruction can benefit any student with a desire to improve their academic performance.
In my spare time, I enjoy salsa dancing, reading, and going to the gym.
