I am a Bay Area native and attended high school at Henry M. Gunn. Owing to a large amount of wanderlust, I attended Hamilton College in the cold upper reaches of New York, and majored in government (political science).
Somewhat unwittingly, I have been a lifelong teacher and have experience working with children of all ages in all sorts of settings. It all began in middle school, where I helped out with a toddler daycare for several years. In my early years of high school, I became a lifeguard for the city of Palo Alto and also taught swim lessons at Rinconada and JLS middle school during the summers. Additionally, I volunteered at the Reading Partners organization for four years, which paired tutors with under-performing elementary school children from underprivileged communities in an attempt to bring their reading and comprehension levels up to those of the rest of their class. I am proud to report that after a year of academic tutoring, each of my pupils had surpassed their required levels of reading. I found that after our sessions together, one student even preferred to sit outside reading a book instead of watching a movie with the rest of his class.
After my sophomore year in college, I became an oral communications tutor, helping students structure and present speeches and presentations. I even competed in a few speech competitions for fun. Once I had finished college, I became an English tutor at Foothill Community College. At AJ Tutoring, I now specialize in test preparation and elementary and middle school academics. I enjoy helping students with everything from strategies for test taking, mastering the core concepts of math, and developing their reading comprehension and writing skills.
Though the technicalities and details of tutoring vary by subject and student, the core concepts remain the same. When I tutor, I teach to put myself out of a job: I want to not only give my students the skills they need, but also get them invested in their own improvement. I do so primarily through excellent communication with the student that allows me to understand each student’s individual motivations and learning styles and adapt accordingly.
Outside of tutoring, I am a big believer in physical fitness. I regularly practice Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which can be described as high-speed full body chess. I also enjoy reading books on lesser-known historical periods and playing video games in my spare time.
