Bridget O'Sullivan

Test Prep Tutor

I was born and raised in Pleasanton and moved to San Luis Obispo to attend Cal Poly. I graduated with my B.S. in psychology and with a minor in child development.

I chose to study psychology because I have always been passionate and interested in the social sciences throughout my educational experience. I wanted to build my knowledge and skills around helping people. During my final year at Cal Poly, I interned at a local high school, where I worked with the counseling department. I was able to shadow school counselors and work with students one on one. This encouraged me to look for career options in education and student services.

I have met many students who get discouraged by math and believe they just aren’t good at the subject. Throughout my middle school and high school years, I held the same mindset and dreaded my required math and statistics courses at college. Despite this, I found that perseverance and a dedication to studying helped me to overcome this doubt and to succeed in these courses. Accordingly, one major point of my teaching philosophy is promoting a growth mindset to students, especially when they encounter difficult subjects. When students believe that they are able to develop and improve their abilities through dedication and hard work, they develop resilience and a passion for learning.

As a test preparation tutor at AJ, I have found that this mindset is extremely important. The SAT and ACT are intimidating tests, and it is important to me that my students truly believe that they can improve. Therefore, I work with students to identify their strengths as well as their challenges and to build an approach to the test that works for that particular student. My focus is not only to provide a deeper understanding of concepts, but also to give students the tools needed to feel confident and be successful.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy being outdoors, hiking, and exploring film photography!
