Carolina Hernandez

Test Prep and Academic Tutor

I was born and raised in Corona, a small town in Southern California, where I developed a passion for learning and teaching at a young age. I began my tutoring career in high school as a volunteer with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. I moved to the Bay Area in 2017 to attend UC Berkeley, where I studied urban studies, which combines my love for architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning.

During college, I tutored at Mathnasium, gaining more experience teaching math specifically and gaining experience working with a wide variety of children both online and in person. I learned how to assess students’ math levels and build personalized learning plans to help them fill in gaps they may have missed while taking online classes.

I found this work especially rewarding and loved working one-on-one with students and seeing their “a-ha” moments when they figured out tough topics like long division and fractions. After graduating, I became the assistant center director of my Mathnasium center, moving into an administrative role. During this transition, I realized that I found more joy in one-on-one tutoring and being able to help and follow students on their academic journey. At AJ, I am excited to be able to help students with SAT, K-8 math and English, algebra, and Spanish tutoring.

When I am not tutoring, I am usually watching anime shows with my partner, lounging around with my cat Batman, or doing a variety of crafts such as journaling, collaging, and painting. I also love cooking and learning new recipes each week. Recently, I made banana bread and I’m hoping to try my hand at apple pie!
