Darsh Balakrishnan

Academic Tutor

As I was growing up, my heroes were scientists. I especially enjoyed reading and listening to Richard Feynman. I still take inspiration from his ability to distill complex topics in physics in a manner that was clear to middle and high school students.

I received my undergraduate degrees in math and physics from the University of Michigan, spent time at NYU as a physics grad student, and completed a graduate degree at Rutgers. Initially, I wanted to be an academic mathematician and physicist, but I was lured by the advances in AI and machine learning to enter the field of data science.

Prior to joining AJ Tutoring, I tutored students in subjects such as linear algebra and analysis in college and statistics in graduate school. Furthermore, I was a residential advisor for two years in college, serving as a mentor for freshman students. All these experiences led me to believe that there are two components to a great tutor: mastery of the subject matter and great interpersonal skills to effectively understand the challenges faced by students in their academic pursuits.

Building intuition for algebra and statistics takes time and practice. On the whole, my approach is to focus on core conceptual understanding so that students understand what they are doing and why they are doing it. I believe that mastery of a subject truly happens when you can effectively teach, so I often challenge my students to teach material back to me. I make each lesson as fun as possible and build exercises to get some quick wins to build momentum and progress on the learning path. I integrate fun examples while providing students with plenty of practice to strengthen their understanding and building their confidence. I also recognize that each student is different, and I work to offer each student a personalized learning plan.

When I am not tutoring, I am an avid swimmer and a big football and cricket fan—you can often find me cheering the Michigan Wolverines or watching whatever cricket game is currently on.
