Dia Kapoor

Academic Tutor

I was born in India but raised in a snowy city in Canada, where I attended Queen’s University and completed my Bachelor of Science in life science. My passion for the natural sciences was initially sparked by my fascination for the human body and medicine. However, I wanted to find a way to merge my interest in public health with natural science and pursue my master’s in public health, concentrating on health behavior and promotion at the University of Arizona.

During my educational career, I realized first-hand how challenging academics can be. In my freshman year, I remember feeling lost and confused as I did not know how to study or where to start. I had to find study methods that worked for me, and that’s when I realized how a “one size fits all” technique doesn’t work, and that each student has their own learning style. This moment of reflection inspired me to help other students study effectively using strategies that work for them.

Apart from leading study sessions with friends at university, I volunteered at a non-profit tutoring center where I had the opportunity to teach adults in war-torn countries. I applied techniques that worked for my students, such as using art and diagrams for visual learners or recommending podcasts for auditory learners. This experience was personally meaningful as I could share knowledge with others and learn from my students too. I continued this experience over two years and had opportunities to celebrate my students’ success with them.

Understanding the challenges of standardized tests and assignments and finding success in university, my teaching philosophy has been to trust the process. I want to understand my students’ strengths and weaknesses and help find their ideal study method. This way, my student gains the skill set and confidence to seek success independently over their educational journey. My teaching style utilizes problem-solving and learning from one’s mistakes while actively applying knowledge to real-life situations. I want to make our sessions fun and exciting while instilling genuine curiosity about the wonderful world of science! I believe that by outlining a plan and taking it one step at a time, my students and I can beat any beast and achieve their goals.

You can find me crocheting, doing embroidery, or working out at the gym when I’m not teaching.
