I was born and raised in Littleton, Colorado, and moved to the suburbs of the Sacramento area shortly before high school. By the time I was moving on to college, I knew I wanted to study something technical, and I eventually settled on chemistry. In part, this decision was due to a high school chemistry teacher who was patient and knowledgeable and fostered in me a love of science and learning.
I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a B.S. in Chemistry, and I immediately pursued jobs in the aerospace and defense industry. After two summer internships in D.C. and a year and a half as a full-time employee in Sunnyvale, I decided it was time to move on to another field. Having been both a recipient and provider of informal tutoring over the years, I decided I really appreciated the tutoring process and chose to pursue formal work as a tutor.
My approach to tutoring is to help students understand what they are learning and why in a broader context first and then to build upon that. Often times in my own studies, zooming out to see the big picture aided me in understanding the material. I understand that each student learns differently, so it is important to me to adapt to a student’s individual needs. I enjoy working in AJ’s 1-on-1 environment because it helps me tailor the content and approach to the student’s academic needs in a meaningful and efficient way.
I currently spend my free time exploring the Bay Area with friends, hiking, and playing music. I am a big NFL football fan, and I also enjoy playing and watching soccer.
