I began tutoring early in high school, and I found that I never wanted to stop. While getting my bachelor’s degree in math and physics, I tutored my friends and classmates and held study halls for STEM students. I love building community and learning, and they’re best when together.
Over the years, I’ve tutored many subjects, but my favorite has always been math—I love being able to watch how my students’ attitudes change over the course of our work together. My enjoyment from watching an uninterested student find confidence and interest in the material as they dig deeper will never cease.
I also appreciate math because each lesson prepares you for next steps or has strange and fascinating applications, no matter how seemingly bland the math may be. My teaching philosophy is that anyone who is willing can learn if they believe that they can. Having a growth-based mindset and not letting setbacks impact your motivation is important to furthering your skills in any area. Learning requires trial and error, and I believe in developing an understanding of the mechanics underlying math, rather than relying upon brute memorization. In my own studies, I learned to re-derive and re-solve things to ensure I truly understood them. I also enjoy coming up with mnemonics with my students, making odd but catchy connections, to help students remember terminology and core rules of math.
When I’m not teaching, I enjoy reading both science fiction and science non fiction, consuming videos and podcasts about animals and evolution, and drawing and writing with my friends over coffee and tea.
