Jared Sutton

Academic Tutor

I was raised by parents who were passionate about rationally understanding how the world works. They never discouraged me from asking questions, which led me to develop the broad love of learning that still defines me today. I love teaching because it involves learning about my students’ perspectives so that I can adapt our lessons to be compatible with their particular way of understanding the world.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area, primarily in the suburbs in and around San Carlos. After graduating from Everest High School in Redwood City, I went on to attend California State University, Sacramento, where I earned a B.S. in physics and a B.A. in mathematics. Over most of my academic career, but especially in STEM courses, I found myself at or near the top of the class in test scores and project grades. This motivated me to dedicate as much free time as I could to helping my peers better understand any content that confused them. Their successes helped make my educational experience even more rewarding.

I first volunteered as a peer tutor during my senior year of high school, helping my classmates complete their AP Calculus final projects. I found it initially challenging as I learned to navigate different learning styles, but ultimately extremely rewarding as I witnessed their successes. In college, I organized and led group study sessions to help my classmates prepare for physics and math tests, and I volunteered at our peer tutoring center in the physics department, as well as tutoring privately 1-on-1.

I’ve always had a knack for logical and mathematical reasoning and for grasping, applying, and relating a broad array of abstract concepts. These skills allow me to methodically and precisely explain complicated ideas in a variety of ways that are accessible to a broad range of learning styles. Physics is a naturally good fit for this process, as students learning new material can benefit greatly from a thorough understanding of the relevant foundational concepts.

In a nutshell, my educational philosophy is that shameless curiosity, self-discipline, and self-compassion are the key ingredients of a lifelong learner. All of these skills can be developed with practice, access to honest and compassionate feedback, and the patient guidance of knowledgeable and inspiring teachers. As a tutor, I am especially well-positioned to play an invaluable role in this process, due to the time and attention I am able to dedicate towards meeting the learning needs of each of my students.

In my spare time, I enjoy listening to podcasts or music, philosophizing about reality, and occasionally playing video games. I also enjoy a good political debate about current events.
