Academic Tutor

As a child growing up in rural Texas, books were my window to the rest of the world. My grandfather first introduced me to the joy of reading — his love of 19th century poetry a charming juxtaposition to his cowboy hat and gentle Texan drawl. My interest in literature and storytelling only grew from there, so I pursued a BA in English literary studies with a minor in history at Wayland University, a private liberal arts university in Texas. I furthered my studies in the United Kingdom at Durham University, where I completed a master’s degree (with honors) in English literary studies with a focus in 18th century literature and women’s studies.

I particularly enjoyed the enriching discussions in my university classes. Participating in these conversations was especially impactful to me because they not only boosted my confidence, but also aided in cultivating my active listening skills and open-minded perspective. My professors were excellent facilitators; they encouraged individual critical thinking, set the tone for considerate discourse among classmates, and knew when to step in to offer guidance or insight on the topic at hand. My goal as an educator is to carry on the conversation and create a similar learning experience for my own students; I strive to create a learning environment that fosters empathy, compassion, and student-empowerment.

As a teacher and tutor, I love helping students grow their self-confidence and reach their full potential. My main goal is to enable my students to become self-sufficient in their writing and analytical skills. I intend for concepts covered during my lessons to not only be relevant to a single essay or assignment, but to build a solid skillset that is integral to good writing. The 1-1 tutoring environment itself is a powerful tool in enabling students to reach their academic goals. It creates a space for me to meet the individual student where they are and to create a plan to address their specific needs, whether it be guiding them through a step-by-step essay writing formula, or developing their analytical skills and awareness of historical nuance.

Prior to joining AJ Tutoring, I spent five years working internationally and in culturally and demographically diverse communities. I moved to the Bay Area from Abu Dhabi, where I taught AP English language and literature courses at the International School of Choueifat. Prior to this, I worked with young people in a range of capacities. I volunteered for a year via Americorps as a certified reading interventionist for The Reading Assist Institute in Delaware. During my undergraduate career, I worked as writing tutor at our on-campus multidisciplinary writing center, where I guided both undergraduate and postgraduate students from across all disciplines through the entire the essay writing process. I also have experience coaching high school tennis.

When I’m not in the classroom, you may find me on the tennis court, exploring a new hiking trail, or plotting out my next writing project.
