Leilany Torres

Academic Tutor

Growing up in the Bay Area, I was fueled by a perpetual need to always learn and do more. I attended the University of California, Davis, where I realized that I and many of my high achieving classmates had gaps in our understanding of what it really means to study—and to study effectively. So, after graduating from UC Davis with a major in neurobiology, physiology and behavior and a minor in English studies, I became passionate about helping other students reach their potential through developing effective study routines and a passion for learning.

I began tutoring classmates early on in my education: I understood personally what it was like to struggle with the week’s topic despite working hard, but to be too afraid to ask the teacher for help. As a chemistry tutor, I believe that understanding how to learn, take notes, and manage our time, is as important, if not more so, than receiving a stellar grade on an assignment. I also strongly believe that tutoring is not a one-size-fits-all approach. I personalize my sessions with each student based on their learning style and goals in order to develop their confidence and encourage their interests. I prioritize developing a strong foundation in both study skills and content knowledge by addressing gaps from past material and helping students make connections between their current topic and past experiences.

When I’m not tutoring, I am either learning more about the brain and how we can maximize our productivity or reading a good sci-fi book curled up in bed with my dog.
