While I was born in Memphis, I moved frequently and attended seven different schools. By the time I adjusted to one school and curriculum, I was already moving again! Because of my educational experiences, I quickly learned the importance of good study habits and organization, and I hope to pass along these skills to my students.
I graduated from Virginia Tech in three years with a degree in history and a minor in GIS/remote sensing. I have loved reading ever since I was little, and I am passionate about a range of historical subjects. I also took many math and science courses to earn my minor, and I learned to effectively read and analyze both historical and scientific papers.
When I was fourteen, I started my teaching career as a volunteer museum docent at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta. From there, I tutored English, history, and French for my high school’s National Honor Society and Beta Club. I also worked with younger students as a summer camp counselor for a STEM-based camp at the Fernbank Museum and nannied for children ages 2-10.
During high school, I completed AP English Language and Literature, AP Calculus, and AP Physics, among other AP classes. These classes and my SAT success gave me the ability to apply to a wide range of universities and to attend Virginia Tech. Inspired by my personal academic experiences, I am passionate about helping other students unlock their own opportunities. I also understand the pressures that students taking the SAT and ACT are facing — the test is both important and intimidating. In my tutoring sessions, I work to build my students’ confidence by reminding them how much they do know, while also identifying and helping them in areas in which they need to focus and develop effective approaches.
Whether I’m teaching the SAT or helping students navigate analysis and writing in their English and history classes, my teaching philosophy is to help students build on the skills they already have, while at the same time building their confidence. I know that every student learns differently and has their own strengths and weaknesses, which I identify so that each tutoring session can be as efficient as possible. I also appreciate how the 1-on-1 format allows me to connect with my students, ensuring that they feel comfortable asking for help.
In my free time, I enjoy reading, knitting, and learning new languages!
