Matthew-Mina Hanna

Academic Tutor

Born and raised in Los Angeles, I always had a peripheral interest in mathematics, but that interest became front and center when I moved to a new high school that had a well developed support network for math students. The encouragement I received from my teachers and new friends helped me build such a positive association with math that I decided to take a calculus course at Santa Monica College. My professor emphasized the connection between visual intuition of geometry and the efficient symbolic manipulation in algebra, allowing me to develop a solid grasp of the content and a passion for the subject.

Inspired by receiving 5s for both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams and a perfect score in the SAT Math Level 2, I decided to major in math at UC Riverside, where I explored both proof-based mathematics and mathematical research. Following an intense research project, I decided to pursue a master’s degree in mathematics at CSU East Bay with an eventual goal of becoming a math professor.

In teaching math, I live by the saying that “Math is not a spectator sport.” I believe that true learning happens through building experience and patience in the face of challenging problems. I am to encourage my students to be comfortable making mistakes and learning from them, as these problem solving skills will help them in both their studies and future careers. My experience with math also allows me to both provide students with strategies to help them develop their accuracy and understanding and to identify pitfalls to help guide students in the right direction. I work with my students on test taking strategies, such as “How to not panic if you forget a formula,” and, most importantly, I aim to create an environment where my students have a positive association with math. High-school is a stressful time, and math is too beautiful of a subject to add to that stress.

When I am not tutoring or studying math, I am usually at the gym or playing osu.
