Michael Short

Academic Tutor

I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and attended high school at the University School of Milwaukee. There, I developed a strong work ethic and learned the value of time management skills by completing a total of nine AP classes and 5-6 hours of daily homework. In school, my interests spanned a variety of subjects, but I always preferred and excelled in STEM courses. I loved visualizing and mastering the different concepts, such as related rates in calculus or simple harmonic motion in AP Physics. I gained immense satisfaction from entering a unit with little knowledge of the material, learning different problem solving approaches for each concept, and eventually achieving a level of mastery that enabled me to complete challenging, abstract test problems. I did my best to maintain a well-rounded high school experience by playing the saxophone in the jazz band and participating in several after-school sports: soccer in the fall, swimming in the winter, and baseball in the spring. I was ecstatic to matriculate at Duke University where I graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and a certificate in aerospace engineering.

Prior to enrolling at Duke, I worked with a number of adolescents during the completion of my Eagle Scout project. Through this experience, I grew more confident in my ability to relate to and communicate with teenage scouts who were eager to help and learn. A few years later, as a junior at Duke, I enjoyed working in a similar setting with students as a teacher’s assistant for an elective mechanical engineering class. I quickly discovered I had a seemingly endless amount of energy for helping students who cared about improving their understanding of the course material. I found it helpful, too, that I could clearly remember my own previous struggles in the class, and I used my experiences to identify where each student needed help. As a tutor, I am excited to show up for work each day as my authentic self—someone who is kind, who is a helper and a good listener, and who cares personally about his students.

Aside from tutoring, I stay active by running in my Noe Valley neighborhood, writing my own H.I.I.T workouts, and using my friend’s Peloton. I also love to dance, take weekly Bhangra and Hip Hop classes, and take advantage of opportunities to travel all over the world.
