As an East Coast native, I always dreamed of making it to California one day. I began my trek across the country via Washington University in St. Louis, where I spent five years earning an undergraduate degree in psychology and a master’s in social work. While in school I tutored middle, high school, and college students, igniting my passion for one-on-one educational improvement. I loved seeing that “click” when a student could see how to solve a system of equations and verify that the answer was correct.
After graduating, I spent two years in Seattle tutoring elementary, middle, and high school students. I spent my days supporting students in a wide range of subjects—from basic literacy and math skills to high school calculus, SAT test prep, and essays. While I loved my individual work, I wanted to experience a more diverse population, so I moved to California and began teaching leadership skills to youth from low income backgrounds at Treasure Island Job Corps. I facilitated classes and tailored activities to the needs of often disengaged youth. I then transitioned into nonprofit work, where I both individually supported high school students in academic subjects and facilitated college and career readiness lessons.
Throughout my varied experiences I found I am most passionate about the individual support I can provide for students. I love getting to know students by forming trusting relationships and giving them individualized attention. As a tutor, I seek to explain concepts in a variety of ways, taking into account the different learning styles of each individual. I like to tailor explanations not only to the style of the student, but also to his or her interests and goals, so that each student can relate to the concepts.
Outside tutoring sessions, you can find me playing with my two rescue dogs (Callie and Ellie), crocheting stuffed animals for my nephew, and voraciously reading thrillers.
