I graduated from Gunn High School in Palo Alto feeling excited to learn and well-prepared for college! I attended Colby College in Maine, where I focused my studies on math and art. During my high school and college years, I took on a number of teaching roles—as a gymnastics coach, art teacher, camp counselor, nanny, math tutor, and classroom volunteer. After college, I followed my passion for teaching to UC Santa Cruz, where I earned my credentials in secondary math and art and a Master of Arts in Education. I now delight in tutoring a variety of subjects and test preparation. From attending Calculus camp as a high schooler to taking numerous SAT practice tests alongside my students, I have a wealth of professional training and personal experiences that have helped me to be a more effective and sensitive tutor.
While teaching Algebra and Geometry at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, I learned that my favorite times of day were break, lunch, and after school, when my classroom was buzzing with students who had come for extra help. I simply loved working with students individually and in small groups outside of the typical classroom environment. The tremendous growth that I witnessed during these study sessions inspired me to pursue a career working with students in a more personal way.
I know that each student brings with him or her a unique set of experiences, understandings, beliefs, interests and abilities. At AJ Tutoring, I customize my one-on-one sessions with students as I discover their varied strengths and needs.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy gymnastics, typography, poetry, graffiti art, dance, printmaking, and independent hip hop. I have lived in Spain and Guatemala and delight in speaking Spanish whenever possible. I live two blocks from the beach and one block from the best burritos in Santa Cruz. I am very close with my two older sisters and my parents, all of whom are teachers and also live in the Bay Area!
