I was born in China, and I came to America when I was a junior in high school. I went to the University of California, Berkeley, for college, where I studied chemical biology. I graduated with my undergrad degree with high honors. Then, I went straight to a pharmaceutical company where I became a full-time laboratory chemist. After two years of industrial pharmaceutical experience, I felt that I want to become a physician, as I could actually help to save lives. While preparing to go back to school, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to share what I know and what I have mastered through tutoring.
I have been in the fields of chemistry and biology for quite some time. My education and laboratory experience are a great combination for explaining concepts and drawing out details. Chemistry and biology are in our everyday lives, and we can easily find examples in day-to-day activities. Because of this, it is really interesting to me to talk about these two subject with others. I believe referencing examples from daily lives to explain academic subjects helps students to understand the material and find it intriguing.
My tutoring experience began as early as high school. At that time, I was the after-class math group leader, and I helped a lot of my friends to catch up on their schoolwork. When I became a college student, I was hired by the tutoring center at UC Berkeley. I got to know how fascinating tutoring is and how exciting it is to explain things you know and watch others gain a better understanding. I feel joy when I get to break down knowledge I know into simple pieces for others, and I feel powerful when students then tell me that they can master that content.
From my understanding, chemistry and biology are two of the most difficult subjects to master. I have been a student in a harsh-grading university, and I know how hard it is for students to learn in a high-pressure environment. I believe that encouragement is an important ingredient for excelling in learning: students will learn and digest material faster when they believe they can learn. The first thing I like to teach my student is confidence in pursuing knowledge. 1-on-1 tutoring provides opportunities for addressing the specifics of a student’s challenges. Different student have different learning styles which I as a tutor can work with to help improve each student’s learning curve.
During my free time, I enjoy watching television series and movies, and I am a big fan of sci-fi. I also love listening to Korean music and writing lyrics in Chinese for some favorite Korean songs.
