Rachel Hartley

Academic Tutor

Growing up in Maryland with an engineer for a father, I was destined to fall in love with math. I moved out to California for college and attended Pacific Union College in Napa Valley, where I received a B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Chemistry. I decided to continue my math education and joined the Masters program in Mathematics at SFSU; I’m working on my thesis and will finish my degree this year.

My tutoring career started with my two younger sisters back in middle school, but I became more involved in tutoring in college when I tutored for math classes ranging from Algebra to Calculus. Since then I have done some online tutoring and classroom teaching, but I found it hard to connect 1-on-1 with students in those environments. My favorite part of tutoring is helping my student truly understand why and how everything works, as too often math is taught as a list of steps a student must memorize without knowing why.

Other than math, I enjoy reading long books, baking yummy desserts, and enjoying the occasional nice weather in San Francisco.
