Richa Patel

Academic Tutor

I have been a student all my life, so naturally tutoring felt like the perfect opportunity for me to be able to utilize the skills I have gained throughout my own educational journey and serve as a helping hand to others.

I was born and raised in Texas, and I attended Austin College and earned my B.A. in public health and chemistry. I then earned my master’s in medical science at University of North Texas in Fort Worth, Texas, before beginning medical school in Louisiana. After a year, I learned that medicine was not the path I wanted to pursue. I made the difficult decision to leave and pursue my passion in psychology, and I earned a competitive job opportunity as a clinical psychology research coordinator working with kids tackling depression, anxiety, and trauma.

This path brought me to California in order to pursue my PhD in clinical psychology at Palo Alto University. Although my educational journey is non-traditional, I am grateful for every experience I have had. The lessons I have learned both inside and outside the classroom have all helped me to develop versatility in various methods of teaching and in a multitude of subjects.

Of the subjects I have taught, math has always been a personal favorite because of the satisfaction it brings when you get to solve a difficult or complex problem. I find it particularly satisfying when a student can change their often-negative perspective towards math and realize that they are perfectly capable of combating this subject.

My goal as a tutor is to provide a safe space for students. I take advantage of the 1-on-1 environment to utilize time wisely and cater sessions towards each student to ensure they are truly learning and growing. My experience with children outside of tutoring has also opened my eyes to the importance of creating open and honest communication with my students to allow them to feel comfortable and look forward to tutoring sessions.

When I’m not spending time studying, I really enjoy painting, decorating my apartment, reading romantic novels, and refining my cooking skills,
