I was born and raised in Missoula, Montana, and went to college at the University of Puget Sound in Washington. I completed my B.S. degree in biology Magna Cum Laude and wrote a thesis quantifying microbiomes in relation to mate choice in Arizona desert lizards.
While at the University of Puget Sound, I tutored other students in biology, and after graduating I taught place-based environmental education to a wide range of grade levels at Casper Mountain in Wyoming. I discovered a love of teaching that I hadn’t recognized before: the excitement of helping students think and analyze and learn to recognize their own abilities piqued my interest. Every student came with their own life experiences, and I needed a holistic approach to help them meet their educational goals. My favorite moments from teaching there were when a child told me they wanted to do my job or study science when they grew up. Since then, I have also found great enjoyment in work as a substitute teacher.
Tutoring 1-on-1 allows me to develop a closer relationship with my students, such that we both feel much in the process of learning. I’m a strong advocate for individual and small group study support, as it allows a teacher to problem solve with students, understand where their confusion lies, and then help them to resolve errors. I value getting to know each student’s particular needs and strengths, and I love helping students appreciate math and biology. I love the problem solving aspect of these subjects, and I think that the sciences especially are meant for people to work together.
Nothing beats a good fantasy or sci-fi book in my free time, and I love anything that involves spending time with chickens, dogs, or horses.
