Tae Hyun Nam

Academic Tutor

After I was born in Seoul, the heart of Korea, my parents and I moved here in the pursuit of a better life, the American Dream. Growing up, I found studying and mastering the various topics introduced to me in school to be very rewarding. What I found to be even more rewarding, however, was the experience of imparting the knowledge I had accumulated to my peers and seeing the difference I made in their lives. Due to my expertise and amiable demeanor, I was chosen by my high school teachers to be an Academic Advisor. Under this position, I actively tutored students in my class who were struggling. From there, I joined and volunteered at an after school tutoring initiative where we worked with teachers to connect with and help students who were falling behind in high school.

After graduating from high school, I went to the University of California, Riverside to study Computer Science. There I become intimately familiar with working with abstract and theoretical concepts on a daily basis to give birth to extraordinary projects with my zealous teammates. Even as just a group of first years, my team took 1st place in a competition hosted by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) by creating a virtual arcade filled with games never before seen in life. In my college career, I learned that through human creativity, learning and teaching any topic can become interesting and fun. With my expertise and inventiveness, I hope to teach others while giving them positive and exciting experiences similar to those I was given by my mentors.

Since I have been a child care professional since 2014, I have a wide variety of experiences working with children. All throughout my time in high school, in addition to volunteering for tutoring, I worked with preschool and elementary school children in daycares. Not only did I gain experience in assisting homework completion but I also developed patience while cooking and serving them food everyday. After graduating college, I worked as a Summer Camp Leader at the YMCA where I supervised and led 40+ children for 8+ hours a day, all summer long. After the academic year started again, I worked as an after school teacher for 2 more years, where I continued to help elementary school students by creating fun games and helping them with school work. Long story short, I have been working with students my whole life and I hope to apply my ever-growing experience to push even more students ahead in life.

Outside of tutoring, I have a passion for music and performance. I produce my own arrangements and lyrics to perform when my friends and family are holding events. Additionally, I frequent Improv Groups where I can enjoy thinking on my feet and being creative in the moment. In contrast, I also supremely enjoy scanning the stock market for potential investment opportunities. Going through financial statements, doing company research, as boring as it may sound, brings me great joy!
