I am originally from rural Minnesota. Though I hail from a bustling metropolis of 18,000, I attended school in a nearby town too small for stoplights and graduated at the top of my class of 40. As long as I can remember, math was my favorite subject. The rush of acing a timed arithmetic test evolved into drawing a deep satisfaction from breaking down complex problems and reaching the eventual triumph.

After high school, I moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, to attend St. Catherine University. Initially on the engineering track, I switched to math after realizing that I was only attracted to engineering because it seemed like a sensible way to keep doing math. I also found time to work my other interests into my studies by taking classes in economics and Arabic, participating in multiple study abroad courses, and never losing touch with the inner kid: my senior thesis involved applying game theory to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Ultimately, I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in mathematics.

After working as a programmer at a St. Paul insurance company for nearly two years, I realized how much I missed math. During college, I had tutored in my university’s walk-in tutor center and for the mathematics department, helping students with everything from brushing up on basic skills to calculus. Returning to the rewarding challenge of tutoring seemed only natural.

My experience tutoring in college shaped my conviction that the notion of an individual being a “math person” or “not a math person” is simply false. I truly believe that with the right help and enough patience and hard work, anyone can achieve their math-related goals. It is my goal to help students feel comfortable with the hard work math can require and to share the joy that comes with the “aha!” moments that make it all worthwhile.

In my spare time, you might find me on long walks with my miniature schnauzer, playing video games, traveling, or rereading Harry Potter books.
