Create a Book Review: Developing Analytical Skills

Don’t Fall Behind this Summer

The summer slide is a tricky thing to navigate! Students tend to have more free time, but parents are trying to strike a balance of family time and fun as well as academics. Thankfully there are simple activities that kids can do on the road, at home, or with a 1:1 tutor to keep their skills sharp and avoid that summer slide!

Don’t Just Read…Analyze!

Most students get a summer reading list from school to encourage them to keep up their skills and prepare for the next grade level. While reading is important, we want to encourage kids to think critically as well. Writing book reviews encourages students to think critically about literature. At AJ Tutoring, we guide students in analyzing themes, characters, and narratives, helping them articulate their insights coherently. This practice not only enhances comprehension but also strengthens writing skills, preparing students for academic success across subjects.

First, work with your student to pick a book off one of those grade level lists. A librarian can also be helpful in locating a book that suits your students reading level and matches their interests.

Next, encourage your student to read on a daily basis for at least 15 minutes. When that reading time is up, have them jot down some important details or thoughts about what they just read.

Finally, once they finish the book, they can put all of those ideas together to create a book review!

The AJ Approach

AJ Tutoring is built on the idea that tutoring, and learning, is done best when it is customized to each unique student. While we do offer fun writing workshops over the summer (click here), a writing tutor can really get to know your individual students areas of strength and weakness to build up those foundational writing skills.

Let's discuss your student's academic tutoring, test prep, or college counseling needs!

Our test prep, academic tutoring, and college admissions counseling professionals are here to help you navigate the test taking maze, share our experience with your local school, and inspire your student.
