The PSAT is an important rite of passage for high schoolers across the world. Some have National Merit Scholar goals, and others are just looking for a great first standardized testing experience. With the summer wrapping up sooner than later, there is still time to jumpstart some preparation ahead of the October test date.
What is the PSAT?
The PSAT isn’t just a warm-up—it’s a key part of a student’s academic journey. Short for Preliminary SAT, the PSAT measures skills in reading, writing, and math in a digital format that mirrors the SAT’s structure. Students tackle two sections: Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math, each designed to challenge critical thinking and problem-solving.
Why Does it Matter?
For sophomores and juniors, the PSAT offers a valuable snapshot of where they stand before the high-stakes SAT. For juniors, it also serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Strong performance can open doors to scholarships and college recognition. Even if your student isn’t planning on applying for scholarships, that insight into their all important SAT score has an incredible value.
The AJ Approach
Like any meaningful test, success doesn’t happen by accident. Strategic preparation builds confidence, sharpens skills, and reduces test-day stress. The power of 1:1 tutoring is that ability to take a customized and strategic approach to preparation. Whether a student does a complete PSAT preparation and then focuses on a Spring SAT date, or they do a shorter PSAT preparation and immediately begin preparing for a winter test date, our tutors and directors can shape the best path forward. Our college counseling team can also provide valuable insight into which strategy and timeline is best for each student’s unique goals. By taking the PSAT seriously, students set themselves up for real success—on the SAT and beyond.
