Michael Frier

Test Prep and Academic Tutor

I am a California native and moved from the city of Los Angeles to Los Altos in the second grade. I attended Mountain View High school before journeying north to attend UC Berkeley. There, I set myself up to be a biology major, but I also enjoyed learning about the humanities, especially philosophy and anthropology. I later majored in public health, an area of thought in which biology can move away from the petri dish and meet the interesting facets in culture that affect the biology of health.

At Berkeley, I developed a passion for helping others in the community. I became a peer counselor at the Berkeley Free Clinic and I tutored at local elementary schools. I found myself energized by being able to walk around the room and help move student’s efforts in productive directions. I later joined a club called Pioneers in Engineering, where I helped local high school students create their own engineering projects. I found it amazing how we could turn a few circuit boards and wires into a robotics competition during my final semester. Technical subjects can be challenging, but when there is a visible application and personalized guidance, the challenge can be highly empowering.

I believe learning is best when it is cooperative and engaging. I value 1-on-1 tutoring because it allows so much room to personalize learning for a student’s unique style, whether it be through learning visually, discussing the subject and connecting related concepts, or simply working through practice problems. My goal is to meet the student at his or her level to provide a tutoring environment that is productive and meaningful.

In my free time, I like to read about current events, play the piano and other instruments, go on nature hikes, and learn something new every day.

Happy parents and students.

The most helpful part of my tutoring was learning the different methods and types of problems on the test, and getting explanations for problems I couldn’t figure out on my own.  Read what others are saying
