Richard Adelstein

Academic Tutor

I was born and raised in San Mateo, where I attended Highlands Elementary, Borel Middle, and Aragon High. I then moved north to attend UC Berkeley and earn a degree in pure mathematics. Having lived here all my life, I understand the pressures faced by Bay Area students. My aim as a tutor has always been to reduce the stress of my students by fostering robust skills and a mature academic approach that will aid them in high school and beyond. My students benefit from my patient and encouraging attention, as well as my enthusiasm for math.

At AJ Tutoring, I specialize in helping my students succeed in their math coursework. My tutoring philosophy is modeled on the proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime”. As a tutor, I strive to have my students gain a deep understanding of the mathematical concepts in their courses so that they feel comfortable approaching new and unfamiliar problems. Math is a subject in which students benefit from a broad understanding and a few key concepts.

In my free time, I enjoy studying math, reading books, playing basketball, riding bikes, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, being outside, working on cars, working odd jobs, looking at maps, watching Bay Area sports, listening to the popular music of today, tomorrow, and yesterday, playing music (I played bass guitar in a rock and roll band while in college), practicing Spanish, and finding new activities to enjoy!
