Course Description:

Grammar: Everything You Weren’t Taught in School is a course intended for those students who will be expected to write (and read) sophisticated, engaging, and exceptional academic papers throughout their school career. Given the complex nature of some topics, however, it is recommended primarily for rising high school freshmen and up. Younger students are welcome, though the curriculum may be adjusted accordingly.

This summer, we will be exploring the foundation upon which all English writing sits: grammar. Few students can differentiate its most basic elements (parts of speech, clauses, and so forth), and a majority of students are using their ears – rather than their eyes – to determine whether what they read is “right” or “wrong.” This leads to a significant number of mistakes when it comes to comprehension and still more mistakes when it comes to composition.

Students will be taught everything from parts of speech to punctuation, and the course will conclude with a discussion of grammar vs. style and how to develop one’s collegiate voice for writing essays and completing assignments. Ultimately, students will come away with an ability to command the English language that will set them apart from their peers for years to come.

Make the Most of the Summer!

Students who stay actively engaged in the learning process during the summer perform better during the school year.
