Intro to Data Science

Not everyone who uses a computer is an app developer. People in many fields of science and engineering use computer tools to visualize and interpret complex data in order to solve problems. If you’ve ever wondered how Google provides such relevant search results, or how Netflix recommends us the perfect binge-worthy TV series, this course is for you!

Locations: Online, Los Gatos

Cost: $130/hr

Recommended hours: 12

Goals:

  • Learn to format and read data from various sources.
  • Plot data in order to visualize relationships and understand trends and correlations.
  • Develop mathematical understanding of data using linear algebra and statistics (e.g. correlations and regression)

Course Description:

Whether you are planning on a computer technology related career, or on any other STEM path, you will be called on to use a computer to solve problems. In this class we’ll look at an important use case for how to analyze data. We’ll familiarize ourselves with some basic math concepts, linear algebra, and statistics, then use commonly available tools to look at large data sets. Depending on the level and skills of the student, we’ll use handheld calculators, spreadsheets, Python, or R. Wherever possible we’ll emphasize cloud-based tools.

This course is recommended for students who want to improve their computer skills to help with high school math and science classes, who want an intro to data science principles, who want to add some Python or R to their skill set for college classes, or who may have a particular problem in mind they’d like to solve. All curious learners welcome!
