Preparing for College Humanities Seminars

One of the best things about the college academic experience is also the most challenging: how much it differs from a typical high school class. Especially in humanities seminars, students must go beyond reading comprehension and into active engagement with all kinds of texts, to look at them from a variety of perspectives, and then be able to find and synthesize evidence for a particular point of view. This course will prepare students for these courses and give an early introduction to this exciting new way of thinking and discussing ideas!

Course Description:

This course is designed for students about to enter college or planning on taking more college-oriented classes (such as AP History or English courses), as well as students who find that their high school classes don’t allow as much exploration and engagement as they’d like.

Students will choose a topic in the Humanities that interests them: Literature, Philosophy, History, etc. The course will center around a few books (or potentially plays, films, visual arts, etc.) that a student is interested in exploring in depth or needs to study for summer reading. We’ll do a combination of close guided readings, discussion about multiple levels and interpretations of those readings, and finally a thesis centered paper (written in multiple steps to practice the writing process expected in undergraduate studies). Students will get a great introduction to what is required in a college-level humanities seminar!

Make the most of the Summer!

Students who stay actively engaged in the learning process during the summer perform better during the school year.
