Daniel Won

Academic Tutor

As a kid, I often used online tutorials to learn how to draw my favorite characters growing up. Figuring things out step-by-step, I was inspired to share my love for art by helping my peers build their art skills.

While I primarily focused on math and science subjects in my education, I
discovered I could translate my visual learning skills into making abstract concepts easier to understand and became interested in engineering as the intersection between science, technology, and visual design. After graduating from Bellarmine College Preparatory High School, I earned dual degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences as well as Cognitive Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Before I came to AJ, teaching had been an extracurricular focus for me as I enjoyed the
gratifying experience of helping others find their passion in new disciplines. I tutored elementary students and volunteered as a caretaker for youth with mental disabilities. Through roles as a design mentor and instructor for student organizations, I also taught drawing and graphic design to fellow students in both group and 1-to-1 settings. Working with an array of different students, I gained insight on how important it is to customize the learning experience for each student’s unique style of learning. I find this to be especially true for subjects like math and physics that require abstract thinking and problem-solving skills.

Through my teaching and tutoring experience, I have come to believe that any topic, no matter how complex, has the potential to be taught in an easy to understand manner. To support this belief, I follow a philosophy of teaching by example. Relating concepts to real-world situations people are familiar with or visualizing the concepts in action can be an effective way to understanding why these theorems are meaningful and valid in practical applications. As a tutor, I hope to help students reinterpret difficult concepts as simpler paradigms to intuitively solve problems beyond just memorizing formulas.

Outside of academics, drawing, and graphic design, I also love to explore different mediums of visual art, play music, take pictures, and enjoy games with my friends.
