Derrick Okubo

East Bay Math Department Head & Academic Tutor

Biography

As a true academic and educator at heart, I have been learning and teaching mathematics for all of my adult life. While pursuing an undergraduate degree in Pure Mathematics from the University of California Berkeley, I rigorously developed and refined the math skills necessary to teach others. Berkeley taught me to develop sound proof statements and gave me conceptual knowledge of the explanations in math.

After graduating, I applied my degree while expanding my knowledge on education and helping high school students get into the colleges of their choice. I worked and volunteered at many private high schools, public high schools, tutoring centers, and universities. There is no math problem too large or too small. With patience and step-by-step explanations, we can conquer all the math problems of the world! From standardized tests and Advanced Placement Calculus BC to the American Mathematics Competition and Pre-Algebra, I have enjoyed teaching on every level and encourage all my students to embrace the subject with an open mind.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking and camping at regional, state, and national parks. On weekends, you can find me playing music and surfing at Stinson Beach. I am also teaching myself to cook gourmet food, and I spend lots of time taking care of my cat.

Happy parents and students.
