Rachel Lin

Test Prep & Academic Tutor

I first began working as a tutor in my sophomore year of college. Many of my peers were asking me for help in math, political science, and other subjects, and when the professor of that math class reached out to me about math tutor positions at the university library, I naturally applied and loved helping my students succeed.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area and earned a Bachelor of Science in political science with a minor in data science from the George Washington University. The most important skill I learned during my time as an undergraduate was time management. I had to quickly learn how to juggle my part time job and my role as co-president of a student organization, while being on track to graduate early.

I was never very interested in math until taking AP Statistics in high school, and this makes me understanding of the various academic backgrounds of my students so that I can meet my students where they are at. I always enjoy helping students who have struggled with math in the past thrive in their studies and find confidence in their abilities. In my experiences tutoring the SAT, I have come to appreciate the opportunity to help students overcome what is a challenging and intimidating test in a similar way.

As a tutor, I have learned the importance of building strong relationships with my students, especially those who are less confident or who have learning disabilities. By developing trust in my students, I am able to better understand the areas they struggle with and identify effective solutions. I work to identify the specific needs of each student and collaborate with them to create unique and effective solutions. Many students struggle with difficulty remembering key terms and concepts and not knowing how to study for higher level courses. So, in addition to teaching students the content, I help them create study plans, flashcards, and other study strategies and tools for upcoming exams.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy making bread, nail art, and hiking with my dog.
