The gifts of reason and knowledge are among few entities that can be given without being “taken away” from the giver. For this reason, among others, it is an honor to educate.
Born and raised in California, I grew up mostly in the Roseville area where I began working towards the goal of mastering a second and third language: Spanish and French, respectively. The patience and passion of wonderful teachers helped me transform my middle school ambition to a university pursuit and ultimately,a lifelong passion. While growing up in Northern California, I also enjoyed competitive swimming with my sisters, cross country running, writing for the local newspapers and the opportunity to serve as my high school’s California Girls State delegate.
Currently, I am completing my master’s degree in public health biostatistics and epidemiology through the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. I earned my bachelor’s of science in chemistry from UC Davis, after my freshman self saw the “central science” as a rich source of metaphors for life and means to improve human health. In parallel, my zeal for “thought experiments” and different cultures lead me to pursue philosophy and my second language, Spanish, as minors. My academic interests, although diverse, reflect an interest to explore the world beyond the immediate via a priori and empirical truths alike.
At Davis, I engaged in various activities from electronic cigarette research, to a women’s philosophy group and social justice projects for Fair Trade products. One particular highlight was establishing and leading the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology undergraduate chapter at Davis for over 100 students in its first year.
As a tutor, I encourage students to pursue similar opportunities for intellectual and personal growth. I also challenge students to apply material to the “real world”: solubility to nail polish remover, stoichiometry to baking, and multilingualism to international friendships. My teaching style motivates dialogue to understand “why” behind a concept and emphasizes foundational concepts to achieve a deeper understanding of an idea.
Outside of work, I relish running, reading non-fiction, and traveling abroad. I advocate running half marathons and donating blood, though not necessarily on the same day.
