I was raised in Sunnyvale and grew up going to local Bay Area schools. I went to Cupertino High School before attending DeAnza College, where I discovered my passion for teaching. I worked for a year in the DeAnza College Math and Science Tutoring Center as a math tutor, where I taught students of all ages, backgrounds, and ability levels, from algebra to calculus. I enjoyed seeing the smiles and joy come over my students’ faces when they finally figured out difficult concepts that they’d been struggling with. I went on to earn my BS in Mathematics from UC San Diego before beginning my career as a professional tutor.
I find it challenging and invigorating to adapt to each student’s needs and tailor my teaching style to their learning style. My biggest strength is building connections with each of my students and having them walk into the tutoring center excited to learn math and ready to work on their understanding of the material. My tutoring style emphasizes the challenge and enjoyment that math can offer. I favor a conceptual approach that contributes to a broad understanding of mathematical ideas that will benefit students in any math class they take.
Students looking ahead to standardized testing often feel overwhelmed with the amount of material that seems to be covered on the exam, and don’t know where to begin their studying. My favorite part of tutoring the SAT and ACT is watching students’ confidence build throughout the preparation; the test becomes more and more manageable rather than a 4-hour behemoth that they must overcome. Understanding what each student is most afraid of about the exam, teaching new ways to approach standardized test questions, applying the new methods as we progress through the process, and watching that initial fear turn into readiness is where the reward of test preparation is greatest. As an added bonus, we get to laugh together and enjoy ourselves throughout the whole process!
When I am not tutoring I love to go hiking, camping, trying new exotic foods, traveling, and gaming. I try to get out into nature as much as possible, and I also love sports, particularly basketball, and almost never miss a Warriors game. Go Dubs!
