Damian Cathey

Academic Tutor

I grew up in Akron, Ohio, where I played baseball, football, basketball, and soccer while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. After high school, I decided to test the waters, and I moved to Washington DC, to study electrical engineering at Howard University.

After graduating from Howard, I began my engineering career as a patent examiner in Virginia before teaching high school in Maryland for two years. Since then, I have both worked as an engineer and as a middle school and high school teacher. Although engineering was a fruitful career, it could never compare to the fulfillment and peace of mind that I received from teaching, tutoring, and mentoring youth.

I value small group and one-on-one educational environments, which allow for more personal assessment of the student’s progress and can provide a better way for students to participate in their education. My goal is to help bring students above “grade-level standard”. I work with students to establish a strong grasp of the fundamentals that will help them succeed in their studies now and in the future while targeting common core standards. I also believe in partnering with both students and parents through communication and feedback to build a support system around the student.

When not teaching, I enjoy attending sporting events and concerts, trying new restaurants, and cooking.
