Josh Figard

Academic Tutor

I am a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, and I attended schools all over San Francisco, San Bruno, and Pacifica. With the goal of becoming a physician, I attended San Francisco State University to study kinesiology and minor in Spanish. I also supplemented my curriculum with classes that would prepare me for medical school.

During my studies, I began tutoring and immediately fell in love with being able to pass on the tricks, tips, and skills that I had learned and continued to learn from others. I realized what a difference I could make in helping students through their challenges, as my own tutors had done for me. I also had the opportunity to teach an entire supplementary biology course, which only fortified my desire to pass on my knowledge and help students find their own successes. In addition, I have volunteered through the San Francisco Education Fund, assisting high school biology teachers, helping middle school students develop their study skills, and helping elementary school students in a Spanish immersion program improve their reading comprehension in Spanish.

My tutoring philosophy really comes down to two main focuses: having a strong foundation in both academic subjects and executive functioning and developing a thought process rooted in a growth mindset. A strong foundation in a subject allows students to build successfully on their knowledge without missing any core principles: students learn best when they’re able to connect new information to material they’ve experienced in the past. Proper time management and organizational skills allow students to use the learning styles that work best for them to achieve their goals. These skills also set students up for long-term success. Lastly, a growth mindset is what makes all of this possible, as it allows students to realize the potential they have and motivates them to persevere through the challenges they face. I want my students to develop autonomy and self confidence and to find their passions.

When I am not tutoring or studying, I love to go on runs and exercise, cook delicious food for my family and partner, read lots of fiction, and watch Grey’s Anatomy.
